Husband and wife build KCO recruiting firm for food, dairy sectors

Richard A. D'Errico | The Business Review

Jill Osterhout and her husband, Ryan, are building a business that recruits food and beverage executives, engineers and salespeople.
Four years ago, Jill Osterhout watched as her husband Ryan quit his job as a district manager at a local bank to start a mortgage and finance business with his brother, Travis.

“It was through his challenges and victories that I learned many lessons that I have directly applied to my business,” said Jill Osterhout, executive director and managing partner of KCO Resource Management, an executive recruiting firm in Clifton Park. “In addition, his business success enabled him to support mine financially while I was getting started.”

Now, Ryan is a partner at KCO.
The company, founded in 2010, has nine employees. It recruits high-level executives, managers, directors, engineers and salespeople. “We will fill a process engineer position for a yogurt company and in the same week find a startup a CEO,” Osterhout said.

KCO’s niches are the food, beverage and dairy industries.

The biggest obstacle, she said, is finding the right employees for her own business.
“Since we are a close-knit group in our office, we really need to bring people in with the right combination of work ethic, self-motivation to do a good job, respect for our company and a sense of humor,” she said. “It has taken a few trial-and-errors before we have reached our current group.”
